Walter Loving came to the law firm in 2005 and has since become a partner in Wilcoxen Callaham, LLP. Walter began his career as an insurance defense lawyer defending individual insureds and corporate defendants for 16 years. Since 2005, he has had the privilege of exclusively representing injury victims and their families, as well as individuals who have been discriminated against or otherwise harmed in the workplace. This unique background gives him the strategic advantage of being able to anticipate the tactics of insurance companies and defense lawyers, and effectively counter their moves.
Walter credits his family upbringing for understanding the importance of hard work, and treating people with respect. His father and grandfather (his namesake) rose to officers in the Army despite the strict racial segregationist policies in the military of that time. His mother became the first member of her family to obtain a college degree graduating from Cal in 1938. In his early childhood, Walter moved around the country and overseas as an “Army Brat”. Later, his family would settle in the northern California community of Davis, where he would go on to attend the University of California at Davis, where he excelled in intercollegiate football and graduated with a degree in Political Science. In 1983 Walter completed his law degree at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.
Walter has been honored by admission to top peer-reviewed organizations for trial lawyers in the country. In 2003, Walter was inducted in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and served as President of the Sacramento Valley Chapter in 2012. (Less than 1 percent of all practicing lawyers throughout the country are admitted as ABOTA members). In 2016 Walter received the Chapter’s “Civility Award” for his professionalism in dealing with counsel and the judiciary. Walter is one of approximately 150 plaintiff injury lawyers in California who is certified as a “Civil Trial Specialist” by the National Board of Trial Advocacy”. He is also board certified by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys in the field of medical malpractice. In 2023 the Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association awarded Walter its annual Professionalism Award.
In over 40 years of practice, Walter has successfully represented thousands of individuals and families. To name a few, he obtained seven figure compensation for a woman paralyzed in a freeway accident when her seat belt failed. Along with Dan Wilcoxen, a multimillion dollar result was obtained for a young boy and his family when a seat back failure caused the boy’s traumatic brain injury. Walter has a track record of successfully suing chiropractors for injuries including paralysis and death. Recently, Walter obtained a seven figure result in a wrongful death case when an elderly couple were killed in a freeway accident.
Recognizing the need to give back to the community, Walter has been actively involved in numerous volunteer activities over the years. For 5 years he served as a mentor at Hiram Johnson High School as a member of the 100 Black Men. He has coached youth sports including 3 years as assistant coach for the Davis High Varsity football team. During his term as president of ABOTA he initiated and continues to lead the annual Feed the Hungry Barbeque at St. Philomenes Church in Carmichael. Walter also volunteers as a Judge Pro Tem for the Sacramento Superior Court.
